April 11, 2023 —Kendal is a leading, not-for-profit organization of affiliate communities and programs serving older adults in nine states*.
Notably, in 2022, all eight operating Kendal Life Plan Communities achieved an occupancy rate of 90% or higher for independent residential living, with five of the eight reaching 95% or better. Shared Quaker values, an A-Team of employees, outstanding services and amenities, and a commitment to supporting communities where older adults help drive and influence community priorities is a compelling draw to living in a Kendal community.
Kendal Affiliates Achieve High Residential Independent Living Occupancy Rates
High occupancy rates across Kendal show that demand for Kendal Life Plan Communities (formerly called CCRCs) remains strong. Kendal affiliate communities meet different needs and preferences, ranging from campuses where nature abounds in quaint college towns to modern apartment living in bustling metropolitan areas.
Leader Across the Nation
At the start of 2023, the National Investment Center reported that across the field of senior living, the average occupancy rate for independent living has increased since 2020, with a national average occupancy rate of 87%. Kendal affiliate communities exceeded the national occupancy rate, a credit to the robust offerings and strong sense of community across the Kendal System.
Occupancy rates have always been an important marker indicating the community’s financial strength. This high demand also sheds light on residents’ perception of the desirability and quality of the community’s lifestyle, amenities and services.
Paired with these high occupancy rates are healthy waiting lists, with some prospective residents waiting until availability opens rather than seeking other retirement living options, further demonstrating the significant interest in living in a Kendal community.
Why are Occupancy Rates Important?
When prospective residents inquire about a senior living community, top questions often relate to the community’s residences, campus amenities, dining options and health care services. Beyond exploring those considerations, individuals should inquire about the community’s occupancy rates. Higher occupancy rates and longer waiting lists can signal a senior living community’s desirability.
What Prospective Residents Should Look For

Kendal affiliate communities provide a unique option to older adults who seek a place of community and collaboration. As a not-for-profit, values-based organization that lives this mission in all aspects of operations, it is no surprise that demand for Kendal communities is so high.
