Oberlin, Ohio (August 29, 2024) – In a heartwarming display of community collaboration, creativity, and dedication to a greener planet, Kendal at Oberlin is proud to announce its latest resident initiative, the Whimsical Art Chairs project, set to support Oberlin Community Services (OCS). This unique partnership showcases the talents and dedication of older adult residents at Kendal at Oberlin, who have come together to transform donated old wooden chairs to reuse as stunning works of art.
A Creative Community Effort
The Whimsical Art Chairs initiative began with generous chair donations from vendors at Main Street Antiques. These chairs underwent repairs by skilled workers at the Kendal Wood Shop before being transformed into one-of-a-kind artistic pieces by Kendal residents. Among them, organizer Kathleen Cerveny led a team of about sixteen residents in decorating the chairs with a touch of artistry and whimsy.
Kathleen, who also manages the Kendal Art Studio, shared her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It’s been a lot of fun to do. Chairs for charities is a popular fundraising project across the country, and we hope others continue the project in Oberlin.” Her own contributions include two chairs adorned with haikus she penned, adding a unique literary flourish to the already captivating designs.
The Art in Our Lives Series
Before these artistic creations leave Kendal, they will be featured at the Kendal at Oberlin Art Studio’s monthly “Art in Our Lives” series on September 5. Here, the artists will share their experiences and the stories behind each chair, offering attendees an intimate look into the creative process.
Media Photo Opportunity: Media is invited to attend the Art in Our Lives event on September 5 at 1:00 pm to interview residents and staff and capture the fun, creativity, and dedication to art, community, and sustainability. Held at Kendal at Oberlin, 600 Kendal Dr, Oberlin, OH 44074.
Following this event, the chairs will be on display in Kendal’s Heiser Lounge until they are moved to the FAVA Art Fair.
A Day of Art and Community at FAVA Art Fair
The Whimsical Art Chairs will be moved to the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA) Second Annual Art Fair in the Square. Scheduled for Saturday, September 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Tappan Square in Oberlin, the event promises a day of artistic exploration with over 70 artists, live music, food trucks, and more.
Each whimsical chair will be available for purchase at $75, with credit card payments accepted thanks to the assistance of OCS. Proceeds from the sales will directly support Oberlin Community Services, reinforcing Kendal at Oberlin’s commitment to making a positive impact in the local community.
