Creative Strategies in Employee Engagement at Collington Inspire a Team Member to Publish Poetry Book from the Heart

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mitchellville, MD – Collington – A Kendal Affiliate, a Life Plan Community for older adults located on 125 beautiful, wooded acres in suburban Washington DC, is proud to announce the publication of “All Lanes Thru,” a deeply personal poetry book by Jamisha Norman, culinary department team leader and an inspiring young poet.

With support from Collington’s Scholarship Fund, Jamisha is pursuing a degree in elementary education and, with resident and community encouragement, pursuing her artistic passions.

A Journey of Redemption and Expression

Jamisha Norman, a dedicated team leader at Collington and aspiring elementary educator, has translated her life experiences into poetry that resonates across generations. Her book, “All Lanes Thru,” touches upon universal themes of loss, love, and redemption, serving as both a personal catharsis and a source of inspiration for others.

“When I was in the second grade, I had a teacher who made a profound impact on my life. I hope to be such a mentor for others, guiding them toward success,” said Jamisha, who is pursuing a degree in Elementary Education at Western Governors University.

“I will teach every student that failure is never an option, but a place for redemption. I want that one young person going through trials and tribulations to know they aren’t struggling alone, and they aren’t invisible.’

Empowering Creativity Through Community

Jamisha’s pursuit of her degree in elementary education is supported by Collington’s Scholarship Fund, which offers awards for employees enrolled in degree programs or seeking professional certifications. This support for professional development underscores our dedication to empowering employees through creativity and personal development. This scholarship program was established in 2006 to encourage team members to enhance their level of education and job skills, improve employee satisfaction, and aid in retaining our valued employees.

Karen Schofield-Leca, Director of Philanthropy, shares that in the last decade, 250 employees have received scholarships worth nearly $400,000 for studies ranging from teaching to physical therapy, culinary arts to information technology, and advanced degrees.

Jamisha Poet with 2 residents

The book’s title, inspired by a sign from Jamisha’s daily commute, symbolizes the forward momentum and emotional growth she strives to impart.

“Writing allows me to express myself and find clarity in chaos,” Jamisha shared. Her ability to turn life challenges into poetic art showcases the healing power of creativity and the importance of nurturing such talents within our community.

Fostering Intergenerational Connections

Beyond her contributions to Collington’s culinary team, Jamisha was also invited to join the resident-led poetry group, convened by Collington resident Marilyn Austin, a lifelong poetry enthusiast, to read from her creative work and receive feedback, creating meaningful intergenerational connections.

“Having the common interest of this art style, it’s easy to forget [residents] are not my peers,” Jamisha said of an impromptu poetry reading that included herself, resident poets, and a pianist to accompany the readings. “They are not there to judge; they just listen, tweak, and support.

Her engagement with residents highlights Collington’s commitment to fostering a vibrant, supportive community where all members can share and grow through artistic expression.

Jamisha’s book is available on Amazon, inviting readers of all ages to explore the depth of her insight and emotion.

Piece of Your Rib

By Jamisha P. Norman

Almost as if I was made from your being

Like a part of you created me

A perfect description of me rests in you

The best parts and the flaws included

A connection that lasts past mortality, timeless

My heart is wherever you are

Two beating as one

Place your hand over to the left to feel the sync

You are me and I am you

More of myself than I could ever be

The puzzle piece my life desperately longed for

The completion of all I was missing in life

If there is a person for everyone, I think I found mine

As if I am looking in a mirror staring at my own reflection

We are one of one
