2023-A Year of Opportunities
Over 2023, Kendal shared many inspiring stories, highlighting the impact Kendal Charitable funding opportunities have afforded. In this article, we recap the amazing stories that were featured in the media and online as Kendal Charitable Funds (KCF) continued its signature funding opportunities, the Lloyd Lewis Promising Innovations Grant and the Affiliate Grant.
This work would not be possible without the outstanding service the Kendal Charitable Funds Board of Directors provides and the generous donations of KCF’s Annual Corporate Partners, board members and other donors.
About Kendal Charitable Funds
The Promising Innovations Fund provides grants to non-profits outside of Kendal who are innovating new programs, projects and solutions that positively impact the lives of older adults in society. This grant was awarded to the Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School (AoH) for a two-year period. With the grant funding, AoH is supporting its Healthcare Career Pathways program, which includes Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training, for a 24-month grant period from January 2023 to December 2024. We look forward to sharing more news about AoH’s continued progress in the new year.
The Affiliate Grant supports Kendal affiliates to curate inventive programs that impact, engage and enrich the lives of older adults, the community around them, and staff and workforce initiatives. In 2022, KCF opened its latest grant program to support affiliates in areas focused on increasing commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and a sense of Belonging (DEIB), particularly among employees.

This funding is supporting AoH’s Healthcare Career Pathways Program, which prepares CNA graduates for jobs in the healthcare field, as well as the field of senior living and aging services.
Kendal at Ithaca Strengthens Commitment to DEIB – Members of the Kendal at Ithaca DEIB Committee, which includes residents, staff and board members, recognized a budding opportunity with the Ithaca Southside Community Center. Kendal at Ithaca residents enjoy the opportunity to provide classes at the community center, which allows them to share their skills and engage with the local community. This year, the community also decided to offer the pool on campus to the children who participate in the community center’s summer camp.
Kendal at Oberlin Demonstrates Commitments to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging – In 2022, Kendal at Oberlin set out to achieve the SAGECare certification and the LEI recognition, both testaments to a community’s commitment to serving LGBTQ+ residents with the care and compassion they deserve. These trainings have made tangible differences in the community, including updated statements of diversity and new signage which signals Kendal at Oberlin is a welcoming and inclusive campus.
Creating an Environment of Compassion and Acceptance at The Admiral at the Lake – The Admiral at the Lake took the next steps with two projects tackling DEIAB (diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging), reaching beyond the campus’s four walls. The first was to engage a consulting firm to lead an employee workshop addressing the community’s Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and Cultural Values (CV). Secondly, the community identified two ambassadors to become certified in the CQ program to facilitate workshops in the future.
Amplifying Kendal at Lexington’s Employee Voice – When KCF opened the latest round of affiliate grants, Kendal at Lexington knew it wanted to empower staff to make their innovative ideas a reality. The community dived into some friendly competition, organizing a contest for staff members and teams to pitch their best ideas to enhance the employee experience.
Barclay Friends Creative Approach to Recruiting and Retaining CNAs – When KCF launched the latest round of affiliate grants, Barclay Friends knew they wanted to focus on the critical work CNAs provide to their community. Each day, CNAs assist in daily living activities, and provide the highest quality resident care. To encourage more people to join this workforce, and align Barclay Friends staff to Quaker values, the community launched a paid training model on its campus.
